University of Mary Washington and Hayfield partner up

Using dendrocronology to date the wood of the attic rafters at Hayfield ManorWorking in conjunction with the University of Mary Washington’s historic preservation department, Hayfield has been restored and stabilized in a manor that will benefit future scholars, students and the community. Under the suggestion of Professor Gary Stanton the preservation of original features from the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s, where possible, were restored and preserved in place. While not every feature could be saved because of neglect and vandalism, every effort was made to keep existing materials. With the continued help of Professor Stanton Hayfield’s history is continuing to be documented and preserved.

The University of Mary Washington historic preservation has recently hosted a ‘Friday Frolic’ where Hayfield was open to the students for a private tour. Professor Stanton lead over twenty students on a thorough tour of the house, pointing out the smallest architectural details to aid in dating the different time periods of renovations and construction. Professor Stanton also emphasized the different mechanical evidence throughout the house to demonstrate how and when different utilities entered Hayfield.

Hayfield and The University of Mary Washington realize the value in keeping the manor open to further studies to benefit preservation and the community.
